"Kol Yisrael Arevim Ze La Zeh – All of Israel is Responsible for One Another"

You’ve probably heard this saying before, maybe even learned it as a song in school. But what does it really mean when we say that all Jews are responsible for one another?

It means that all Jews have made this unspoken commitment to something larger than ourselves. As members of a people, we feel connected to and respond to the needs of individuals and families in our Jewish community and around the world.

(And this particular responsibility to the Jewish people trains Jews to also feel a great deal of universal responsibility to people beyond the Jewish community – as so many charities across North American know, because so many Jews are contributors and volunteers!)

A perfect example of being committed to something larger than ourselves is supporting the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, whose mission is to enrich the quality of Jewish life in Miami-Dade County by bringing comfort and hope to the vulnerable and by investing in programs that build Jewish knowledge, identity and peoplehood — ensuring the next generation of Jews.

By investing in our day schools and making sure they were able to stay strong during the pandemic, Federation has ensured the continuity of Jewish education in Miami.

In a show of Hakarat Hatov (gratitude), our funded schools decided to dedicate the week before Super Sunday 2022– March 7th-11th-- to learning about the work of Federation and its impact in our community and around the world.

Every funded school was responsible for creating age appropriate activities around tzedakah (charity), gemilut chasadim (kindness), and tikkun olam (repairing the world) – pillars around which the work of Federation is based.

Each school received a banner with the theme for Federation Week prominently displayed – Kol Yisrael Arevim Ze La Zeh.

They also received stickers for the students to put on their shirts as they arrived to school as well as tzedakah boxes to raise money and contribute to this year’s Annual Campaign.

The feedback from Federation Week from our schools, students, and administrators has been overwhelmingly positive:

“I believe that if we start educating kids at this age and giving them opportunities to practice those values and experience initiatives like Federation Week, they will grow to become the best and most committed people to Federation in later years as they grow into adults.”

~ Jodi Bruce, Head of School,
Lehrman Community Day School

“Federation Week and all the activities around it were a big hit with our students. They were excited to get their stickers every morning and to learn about all the different impact areas of our Federation.”

~ Rabbi Yaakov Fried, Middle School teacher,
Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes
