Marshmallows, Leadership, and Improv- an unlikely combination for success that the Diller Teen Fellows program used as a way to engage Fellows in their team building and leadership development.
This month, the Junior Counselor for Diller led a program that allowed the Fellows to compete in a Marshmallow Challenge, designed to encourage groups to collaborate on a prototype structure by planning a vision and thinking through steps to achieve it. The assignment allowed Fellows to test their roles in a group setting as leaders and to exercise imaginative thinking. The tallest structure measured in at six foot nine inches – setting the bar high for this group!
After the challenge, Fellows participated in an improv workshop, focused on forming personal narratives, and working on public speaking skills. They experimented with collaborative thinking and solution oriented responses, employing the “yes, and” philosophy. “Yes, and” is perhaps one of the most practical and direct applications of improv in leadership and professional skills. “Yes, and” is a powerful leadership tool because it allows for affirmation and collaboration: two major traits in today’s leaders. The Fellows were able to invent vivid fantasy worlds and craft adventures, while growing leadership skills that they will use throughout their lives.
Cohort 7 is off to a great start, and is excited for their Jewish Identity Shabbaton in early November! Please follow our journey at: www.dillermiami.org.
